Vitamins are organic (contain carbon), fat soluble or water soluble compounds that occur naturally in food, mostly plant food but some are also derived from animal sources. Most foods contain vitamins but fresh fruit and vegetables are the best source.
They are utilised by the body for various vital functions.Vitamins are not drugs, they are natural food substances, if taken in the recom mended doeses there are no short or long term side effects from taking vitamins.
Without them health declines and in extreme cases death can occur. Vitamins are usually safe to take except when taken in great excess.
In many countries, particularly western countries, a vitamin or food concentrate supplemt should be taken to rectify deficiencies in quantity and quality of vitamins.
